I'm a Tutor article! Find out all you need to know about complying with legislation around providing NI numbers.

Updated this week

We’re contacting all tutors who’ve worked with us over the past couple of years as we need to record your NI number to comply with recent legislation.

Why do you need to get the NI number?

A new legislation was passed, which requires MyTutor (and other applicable digital platforms) to provide an annual report relating to active sellers (or in our case, Tutors) providing services on the digital platform to HMRC.

How do I find my NI number?

You can find this on a P60/ payslip, or follow guidance from HMRC here.

What if you don’t have an NI number?

Maybe you were never given an NI number when you turned 16. Or perhaps you’re an international student and you haven’t managed to apply for one yet. Whatever the reason, you can apply for one with HMRC here.

Reminder about tax self-assessments

Your tax return can be submitted from the 6th of April each year and covers all your earnings from April to April (the tax year). The latest you can submit to HMRC for the 23/24 tax year is the 31st of January. If you need advice or support, please see our tutor tax webinar and blog.

FAQs on HMRC Reporting Requirements for Tutors

Why does MyTutor need my National Insurance number?

HMRC requires online platforms to report the income of individuals earning on their platforms. Your National Insurance number is essential for this report. You can read more about the new legislation here, which requires to report on lessons from the last couple of years.

Does MyTutor handle my taxes now?

No, you still remain responsible for managing your own taxes. This reporting requirement does not change your self-employment status nor your tax obligations. As a reminder on how to handle your taxes, please check out this help page.

What if I don’t provide my NI number?

If we’re unable to include your NI number in our report to HMRC, we may need to restrict your access to work on the platform.

How can I find my NI number?

Your National Insurance (NI) number can be found on payslips, P60 forms, or HMRC correspondence. Follow the guidance on HRMC here to find yours.

What information will be reported?

Along with your NI number, we’ll report your name, address, and the total income earned on our platform in the past year.

Is my data secure?

Yes. We comply with strict data protection standards. Your information will only be shared with HMRC as required by law.

When is the deadline?

Please share your NI number with us by 24/01/2025.

Why are you only asking for it now if the deadline is so soon?

As MyTutor is a tutoring platform and not a typical sales marketplace, it took additional time to establish how the regulations applied to us specifically. Once we had some more guidance, we moved quickly to request this information from tutors to ensure compliance.
