How do taxes work as a self-employed tutor?

I'm a Tutor article! Learn about self-employment, tax returns, UTR numbers, tax thresholds and where to find trusted tax guidance.

Important information

The information in this article is for general guidance only and should not be relied on as tax advice. If you're unsure about your tax obligations, you should seek advice from a qualified tax professional who can advise you based on your individual circumstances.

Do I need to register as self-employed?

Yes. As a tutor, you'll need to register as self-employed and declare your earnings so you can pay the correct amount of tax.

We know this can feel daunting if it's your first time being self-employed, but there are plenty of resources available to help you understand the process.

Where can I get tax advice?

HMRC should be your first point of contact for guidance on self-employment and tax.

They offer support by phone and webchat, as well as guidance specifically for students.

You can also find helpful resources from Earnr, including:

  • Guidance on completing your tax return.

  • Information about allowable tutoring expenses.

  • Answers to common tax questions.

  • A tax webinar created with MyTutor.

If you'd like advice from other tutors, you can also ask questions in the Tutor Community.

How do I file a tax return?

As a self-employed tutor, you'll need to submit a Self Assessment tax return to HMRC.

You can submit your tax return in one of four ways:

  • By post using the correct paper tax return form.

  • Online through the HMRC website.

  • Using a tax return app or website that submits your return to HMRC.

  • Through an accountant, who can complete and submit your return on your behalf.

Each option has different deadlines and requirements. For example, paper tax returns must be submitted earlier than online returns.

How do I get my UTR number?

Once you've registered with HMRC, your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number will be sent to you by post. This usually takes around two weeks but can sometimes take up to four weeks.

Once it's been processed, you can also find your UTR number in your HMRC online account.

Do I have to pay tax?

As a tutor with MyTutor, you may need to pay Income Tax and National Insurance, depending on your earnings.

You don't need to worry about VAT, as this is already taken care of by MyTutor.

Tax thresholds can change over time, so we recommend checking the latest information on the HMRC website to understand whether you'll need to pay Income Tax or National Insurance.

Not paying tax when it's due can result in penalties and additional charges.

What expenses can I claim?

You may be able to claim expenses that were incurred wholly and exclusively for your tutoring business.

Examples may include:

  • stationery

  • course materials

  • internet costs

  • accountant fees

  • working from home expenses

Keep records of any expenses you plan to claim and make sure they're allowable under HMRC guidance.

How do I prepare my tax return?

Before completing your tax return, gather all the information you'll need.

This will usually include:

  • your personal details, including your National Insurance number and UTR number

  • a summary of your tutoring income, including your MyTutor invoices

  • a summary of any allowable expenses, including receipts

  • details of any other employment or income

Preparing your income and expense records before completing your return will make the process much easier.
