How do I improve my priority status and get more school opportunities?

I'm a Tutor article! Learn how priority status works, how school opportunities are allocated, and what you can do to increase your chances of seeing more school opportunities.

How are school opportunities allocated?

When schools request tutoring, they tell us the subject and times they're looking for. We create a school opportunity and offer it to tutors whose subjects and availability match the school's request.

To avoid a rush, we don't release new opportunities to every tutor at the same time. Instead, we offer them to small groups of tutors in stages.

All tutors receive school opportunities, regardless of their priority status.

Tutors with a higher priority status are offered opportunities first, but there are more school opportunities than priority 1 tutors, so tutors with priority 2 and priority 3 will also receive opportunities.

The number of school opportunities available varies throughout the year, with the highest demand typically between November and May.

What is priority status?

Every tutor has a priority status, ranging from priority 1 to priority 3. Your priority status helps determine when you're offered school opportunities.

  • Priority 1 – You have 100% attendance, 100% punctuality, and you've boosted your profile within the last 7 days. Tutors with priority 1 are offered school opportunities first.

  • Priority 2 – All new tutors start on priority 2. Once you've built up a tutoring history, you'll have priority 2 if you have at least 90% attendance, at least 90% punctuality, and you've boosted your profile within the last 7 days. Tutors with priority 2 are offered opportunities after priority 1 tutors.

  • Priority 3 – Tutors with less than 90% attendance or less than 90% punctuality will have priority 3 and are offered opportunities after priority 1 and priority 2 tutors.

You can check your priority status by selecting View my priority status on the School Opportunities page.

How do I improve my priority status?

To improve your priority status, you'll need to show that you're actively looking for work and that you're a reliable tutor.

To achieve priority 1, you should:

  • Boost your profile regularly. Your boost must be active (within the last 7 days).

  • Attend lessons on time and stay for the required lesson duration (30 minutes if no pupil joins, or the full 55 minutes if they do).

  • Give plenty of notice if you're unable to attend a lesson.

If you meet these expectations, you'll be more likely to achieve priority 1, which means you'll be offered school opportunities before tutors with a lower priority status.

How does priority status affect my chances of getting school opportunities?

Priority status is one of the factors we use when offering school opportunities.

Tutors with priority 1 are offered opportunities first. However, there are more school opportunities than Priority 1 tutors, so tutors with priority 2 and priority 3 will also receive opportunities.

How do I get more school opportunities?

There are several things you can do to increase your chances of seeing more school opportunities:

  • Boost your profile. Boosting tells us you're actively looking for work and increases your ranking compared with tutors who aren't currently boosting. Your boost expires after 7 days, so remember to boost regularly.

  • Keep your availability up to date. If you've marked yourself as unavailable or you're already teaching at a particular time, you won't be offered opportunities during those times. Most school lessons take place between 2 pm and 5 pm, Monday to Thursday, so being available during these hours can increase your chances of seeing opportunities.

  • Offer more subjects and levels. GCSE Maths, English and Science make up most school opportunities, so offering these subjects can increase the number of opportunities available to you.

  • Be reliable. Attending lessons on time and staying for the required lesson duration (30 minutes if no pupil joins, or the full 55 minutes if they do) helps improve your priority status and increases your chances of being offered opportunities first.

How does MyTutor assess reliability?

To assess your reliability, we look at either:

  • all lessons you've delivered during the last 30 days, or

  • your 10 most recent lessons, if you've delivered fewer than 4 lessons during the last 30 days.

If you haven't delivered 10 lessons yet, you'll remain on priority 2 while you build up your tutoring history.

We assess your attendance, punctuality and whether you complete the required lesson duration. These all contribute to your priority status.

What if I miss or I'm late for a lesson?

You're responsible for attending your lessons on time. If you know you'll be late or unable to attend a lesson, let us know as soon as possible.

If exceptional circumstances, such as illness, emergencies or technical issues, affect your attendance or punctuality, contact MyTutor promptly. We'll take these circumstances into account where appropriate.

Giving us as much notice as possible can help prevent your priority status from being affected.
