My pupil isn’t in the lesson space

I'm a Tutor article! What to do if your pupil misses a lesson.

Updated this week

If you find yourself waiting in the lesson space with no sign of your pupil, don’t worry. It happens.

Pupils can sometimes be late or need to miss the lesson completely.

Managing your lesson attendance

We want to ensure you are fairly compensated for your time and preparation, even when things don’t go as planned.
Here is how to handle your time in the lesson space and how pay is calculated if a pupil is late or misses a session.

The 30-Minute Rule

Data shows that if a pupil hasn’t joined within the first 30 minutes of a scheduled school lesson, they are unlikely to attend. To reflect this, our payment policy is as follows:

  • If the pupil joins within the first 30 minutes, run the lesson as usual for the remainder of the session. You will be paid the full hour as normal.

  • If the pupil does not join within the first 30 minutes, you are free to leave the lesson space after the 30-minute mark. You will be paid for 30 minutes of your time, rather than the full hour.

Note: There is no requirement to stay in the lesson space beyond 30 minutes if your pupil has not arrived.

During the lesson

  • Remember that the recording starts from the moment you enter the lesson space, even if your pupil isn’t there.

  • You might get an in-lesson cover opportunity. This happens when you’re waiting for a pupil, and another pupil is waiting for their tutor. So we match you up. If you accept this, you get an extra £10 for managing to deliver a quality lesson with no prep.

After the lesson

There’s no need to let us know about the pupil’s absence. Teachers can track attendance, and we follow up if pupils seem to be struggling to attend their lessons.
