Do I need references for the Schools Programme?
To tutor on the Schools Programme, you'll need to provide two references before your profile can go live. This is part of our safeguarding process and helps ensure you're ready for school placements.
You cannot start tutoring on the Schools Programme until both of your references have been completed.
You must submit both references within 12 weeks of your DBS being approved.
If we don't receive both references within that time, you'll need to complete a new DBS check before you can tutor on the Schools Programme.
Do I need references for private tutoring?
You don't need references to tutor privately, but they can help strengthen your profile and show parents that you're reliable and trustworthy.
Who can be my referee?
Your referees should be people who can confirm your experience, skills and suitability to tutor.
Most tutors choose people who have supervised them in previous jobs, or teachers and lecturers from school or university.
You must choose two referees from the following list:
Current Employer
Previous Employer
University Tutor
University Lecturer
GCSE, Sixth Form or equivalent Tutor/Teacher (only if you are a first-year BA/BSc university student)
If you're a first-year BA/BSc university student, you can use a GCSE, Sixth Form or equivalent teacher as one of your referees.
Your referees must:
have known you for at least six months
not be related to you
We can't accept referee types that aren't included in the list above.
Before you submit your references
Before adding your referees:
make sure they're happy for MyTutor to contact them
choose people who are likely to respond promptly
let them know to look out for our email, including their junk or spam folder
How do I check the status of my references?
You can track the progress of your references in the References section of your onboarding.
You'll be able to see the status of each reference, including whether we're still waiting for a response or whether it has been completed.
If the status shows Waiting for Referee, we haven't received a response yet. We recommend sending your referee a reminder and asking them to check their inbox, including their junk or spam folder.
