Renewing your DBS

I'm a tutor article! Find out more about how you can renew your DBS and why it's important.

Updated this week

🛑 Why is my DBS expiring a problem?

Your DBS expiring is a problem because the Department for Education requires all tutors on the school's programme to have a valid DBS check that is less than 36 months old. To comply with safeguarding rules, we cannot allow tutors with an expiring DBS to continue working in schools.

You will stop seeing new school opportunities once your DBS is within 30 days of expiry. As soon as you upload a new DBS, you’ll regain access to opportunities.

👋 For new tutors: If you upload a DBS during onboarding, it must have been issued within the last 12 weeks. This prevents you from being asked to apply for a new check shortly after joining.

💰 How much does it cost?

If you don’t already have a DBS check, we’ll cover the upfront cost of getting one (£55). The total is made up of:

  • £49.50 for the Enhanced DBS check

  • £5.50 admin fee charged by Verifile (our DBS provider)

You don’t need to pay this in advance. Instead, we’ll automatically deduct £5.50 from your first 10 lessons to cover the cost.

If you don’t complete 10 lessons within one academic term, we’ll invoice you for the remaining balance.

⚖️ Please read the Disclosure and Barring Services terms and
conditions (“DBS Terms”)

1. Capitalised terms in these DBS Terms have the same meaning as in the Tutor

terms and conditions (“Tutor T&Cs”), unless otherwise specified herein.

These DBS Terms should be read in conjunction with the Tutor T&Cs.

2. As set out in the Tutor T&Cs, obtaining an enhanced DBS check is solely your

responsibility. In view of the rules and regulations around working with

children and vulnerable people, you will not be permitted to provide Tutoring

Services without a valid DBS check.

3. You may request that MyTutor arranges a DBS check for you via our

third-party DBS provider (“DBS Supplier”), and where this is the case, pay

the fees associated with obtaining the DBS check on your behalf (“DBS

Charges”).

4. If you opt for MyTutor to provide the service as set out in paragraph 3 above,

you agree to indemnify us for DBS Charges by allowing our Payment Provider

to deduct the DBS Charges paid by us from your Fees, in accordance with

paragraph 5 of these DBS Terms.

5. As at the date of these DBS Terms, the DBS Charge comprises of:

5.1. £49.50 for the enhanced DBS check; and

5.2. £5.50 for our DBS Supplier’s administration fee.

You agree to indemnify us at a rate of £5.50 per Tutorial, for a maximum of 10

Tutorials, or until you have reimbursed the DBS Charges to us in full,

whichever is earlier.

6. If you do not complete 10 Tutorials within one academic term or 100 days

(whichever occurs first), MyTutor will invoice you for any amount that has not

yet been repaid. If you choose to close your MyTutor Account, or MyTutor

closes your Account (for one or more reasons set out in the Tutor T&C’s)

before you have repaid the DBS Charge in full, MyTutor will invoice you for

the remaining amount.

7. If MyTutor invoices you pursuant to paragraph 6 above, you must pay the

amount set out in the invoice to MyTutor within 7 days of the invoice date. If

you fail to do this, MyTutor reserves the right to (a) suspend and/or terminate

your Account; (b) instruct the Payment Provider to withhold funds to offset any

amounts payable to MyTutor; and/or (c) charge you interest on the overdue

amount in accordance with the Tutor T&Cs.

8. We reserve the right to change these DBS Terms at any time to accurately

reflect the latest requirements of the DBS checks (including DBS Charges). It

is your responsibility to review these DBS Terms regularly. Any changes to

these DBS Terms take effect from the date that such updates to these DBS

Terms are published. If you disagree with any changes to these DBS Terms,

you should let MyTutor know and not continue to deliver Tutoring Services or

receive any MTW Services.

*If you are new to MyTutor your DBS application will be with our partner Verifile. You can see the process for this over here
