What’s the difference between private lessons and school lessons?

I’m a Tutor article! MyTutor offers lessons to parents and lessons to pupils via their schools, and they work very differently!

Updated over a year ago

At MyTutor, you can tutor two different types of lessons: private lessons and lessons on the Schools Programme.

We start all of our tutors on the Schools Programme first, and we might invite you to become a private tutor later.

The Schools Programme is where we have the most demand for tutors and we want to make sure that everyone gets the opportunity to work!

But what are the main differences?

School lessons:

  • Lessons are paid for and organised by schools.

  • Tutors pick up lessons as slots. One slot is usually made up of multiple lessons with the same pupil, usually once a week.

  • Schools schedule lessons, and tutors can pick which slots suit them.

  • The number of lesson opportunities offered to tutors depends on your reliability and desire for work.

  • Teachers may reschedule or cancel lessons, but we'll try to avoid making changes right before a lesson is due to start.

Private lessons:

  • Lessons are paid for and organised by parents.

  • Parents and tutors agree on when to have lessons and how many.

  • Tutors get lessons if parents prefer their profile, usually based on the tutor’s price and experience.

  • Parents and students may reschedule or cancel lessons themselves up to 24 hours before the lesson.
