How do I handle taxes and being self-employed?

I'm a Tutor article! We can’t legally offer tax advice, but we can point you in the right direction.

Updated over a week ago

The information below is of a general nature for information purposes and should not be relied on as advice. You should seek advice from a tax professional, who’ll be able to advise you based on your specific circumstances.

As a tutor, you’ll need to register as self-employed and declare your earnings in order to pay the correct amount of tax.

The idea of this can seem quite daunting, so we’ve collated some useful resources to help guide you through the process.

  • HMRC should be your first port of call for guidance around self-employment. You can get in touch with them via phone or live chat. There’s even a specific page for guidance on student jobs.

  • Earnr, the finance and tax app, wrote a blog post answering our tutors’ most common questions such as:

    • When do I need to submit my tax return?

    • What tutoring expenses can I include on my tax return?

  • Earnr also filmed a webinar with us, giving you advice on how to manage their taxes as a tutor. You can watch it in our tutor community here.

You can also ask other tutors for their advice in our community. We hope the links above are a useful starting point.
