What are our expectations of tutors?

I'm a Tutor article! Here are some guidelines as to how to use our platform - we expect our tutors to be professional and reliable!

Updated over a week ago

As a tutor with us, we expect you to be professional and reliable.

When you meet these expectations, you’ll get the most out of MyTutor: more lessons, earnings, experience and impact.

📅 Reliability

Being reliable will improve your priority status. Priority 1 tutors are offered opportunities first.

  • Be on time and teach for the full 55 minutes. Attendance is recorded from when you enter the lesson space after the set-up test.

  • Avoid missing lessons and free meetings. Unhappy parents won’t book lessons with you, and you’ll get fewer school opportunities if this happens regularly.

  • Be proactive. If you have to miss a lesson or are having issues attending, let the parent know or get in touch with us as soon as possible.

  • Check your calendar. Accept slots where you know you can attend all the lessons. Make sure you are updating your availability so you can manage your workload.

📚 Preparation

  • Get the right set-up. Avoid technical hiccups by following our Tech Requirements policy.

    • Please don't access your lesson from a mobile phone. The lesson space was designed to be used specifically on laptops or computers, so delivering a lesson from a mobile phone will lower the lesson quality for yourself and your students. If you're experiencing tech problems on your laptop/PC, please contact our tech support team on Live Chat (bottom right-hand side of the screen).

  • Plan a lesson. Don’t make things up as you go. The best lessons are interactive and engaging, tailored to each pupil. Gather resources and have activities for the entire duration.

  • Be confident. Only accept lessons where you’re familiar with the subject and the exam board.

👩‍🏫 In-lesson behaviour

  • Camera and mic on. Even if your student has them off (it's okay to have your camera switched off whilst waiting for the pupil to enter the lesson space).

  • Find a suitable place. Somewhere quiet and private where you can focus is great. In bed (even sitting up) or in a car isn’t okay. Tutors cannot conduct lessons in public places (cafes, restaurants, shopping malls, public transportation etc.)

    • Tutors cannot work overseas, for any amount of time. This includes short holiday breaks and longer defined periods.

  • Act appropriately at all times. The lesson is recorded from the moment you enter the lesson space, and your student will be able to view it.

  • Focus on your student. Don’t have chats with anyone else or use your phone.

  • Be polite, patient, and encouraging. Remember that you’re working with children who may already be struggling and need a bit more help.

    • If you’re having behaviour issues, speak to the parent or, if it’s a school lesson, leave a note on the lesson report and get in touch with our support team so that we can give you the help that you need.

💬 Communication

  • Be proactive. If you have to miss a lesson or are having issues (tech or otherwise), don’t leave people in the dark. Always contact whoever you can to explain the situation.

  • Leave helpful lesson reports. These reports are used to track a student’s progress and allow cover tutors to plan their lessons, so make sure your report gives readers great insight into your lessons.

  • Stay on-platform. Remember to keep communication on the platform so we can keep things safe and secure.

  • Be responsive. Checking messages avoids issues (like rescheduling requests expiring), and it’s good etiquette to respond even when you’re declining.

Avoid ‘text speak’. Proper grammar and spelling are best, even in the chat box during lessons.

If you find yourself struggling to meet any of these criteria, get in touch with us, and we’ll do what we can to help.

We’re always on hand to provide support, and we want to make sure you have the tools and confidence to be the best tutor.

Live chat is the best way to get in touch with us!

❗ Please remember that these are expectations. If you consistently fail to meet them:

  • At first instance, our dedicated Tutor Quality team will investigate the report and follow up with you.

  • Parents or schools may request a new tutor.

  • In some cases, we may decide that we can no longer work with you.

If you receive a request from a student asking you to complete their coursework or sit an exam for them and you are unsure about it, we have put together some guidance that you can use.
