What are the different types of school lessons?

I'm a Tutor article! Find out more information about who are you teaching, and what kind of lessons you'll deliver!

You might see lots of different terms when we talk about lessons, so let’s explore what they mean!

KS3, GCSEs and A-levels

  • This is what key stage a pupil is at in their learning, and lets you know how to plan their lesson.

  • The way you reschedule lessons also depends on the pupil’s stage.

Recurring and cover slots

  • Recurring slots are our tutors’ bread and butter. These are a normal block of lessons where pupils usually have one a week for 6-10 weeks, and you’d teach them all.

  • Cover slots are one-off lessons where the original tutor lets us know they can’t make it (different to in-lesson cover opportunities!).

3-1 and 1-1

  • This lets you know how many pupils you’re teaching each lesson: 1 pupil or 3 pupils.

Lessons can be a mix of any of these things - like a 3-1 GCSE cover slot or 1-1 A-level recurring slot! Just remember that all lessons are 55-minutes long.
