Policy Article - Attendance and lateness

Updated over a week ago

Introduction

MyTutorWeb Ltd (MTW) was founded to offer life-changing tuition for all. Our site was developed with the aim for high-quality lessons to take place in a safe environment and this is reflected in several key built-in features.

We’re committed to ensuring the highest possible standard of personal safety, well-being and safeguarding of each student and tutor using MTW.

Policy statement

This policy makes it clear what we expect from tutors with regard to attendance and lateness. It seeks to make the attendance and punctuality requirements for tutoring with MyTutor clear to all staff and tutors.

Why do you have an attendance and lateness policy for school opportunities?

Schools draw on limited budgets to pay for tuition for their disadvantaged pupil. So it’s our responsibility to make sure this investment isn’t wasted.

That’s why you must attend every lesson on time, and stay for the full 55-minute duration.

As a tutor, providing a professional service means:

  • Arrive for every lesson before, or as, the lesson is due to start - even if your pupils sometimes arrive late

  • Let us know with as much notice as possible if you can’t make a lesson, so we can find a tutor to cover for you (see our Cancellation Policy)

  • Arrive prepared to deliver a full 55-minute lesson

What is your attendance policy?

You must attend all your lessons for the full 55-minutes unless you tell us in advance that you won’t be able to make it.

Where you’re unable to make a lesson for any reason, you must let us know (ideally with at least 24 hours notice - see our Cancellation Policy) so we can find another tutor to cover the lesson for you. You can let us know from your Bookings page.*

If you attend all your lessons on time, we'll give you access to more school opportunities.

*If you can’t access our website, please contact the support team.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

If you miss a lesson without telling us in advance, we’ll contact you via email to remind you of our policy and check how we can support you.

Over the 60 days following your missed lesson, if you miss any more without telling us beforehand, you’ll receive further warnings and you might be removed from the platform. This will mean you won’t be able to deliver any more lessons with us.

And if you attend all of your lessons on time over those 60 days, we’ll reset your missed lesson warnings.

Note - If you miss the first lesson in a slot, you’ll be released from the remaining lessons in this slot. Pupils make far better progress when they can work with the same tutor week after week. Our policies make sure that we provide consistent and reliable tutors for our school pupils.

What happens if I leave a lesson early?

MyTutor lessons are 55-minutes long. If you leave a lesson before it’s due to end, we’ll contact you by email to remind you of our policy and check what happened.

If you attend all of your lessons in full for the 60-day period following that email, we’ll wipe your slate clean and reset your warnings.

But if you leave several lessons early within those 60 days, we’ll send you another email with a final warning. This may put you at risk of reduced school opportunities.

And if you continue to leave lessons early within 60 days of that final warning, you’ll be removed from the platform and no longer able to deliver lessons with us.

What happens if the pupils leave the lesson before 55-minutes have passed?

We understand that sometimes, pupils have to leave lessons early.

If this happens, the safest thing to do is remain in the lesson space until the lesson ends. Otherwise, you may be marked down as having ended the lesson early.

Should you forget to do this, contact our support team via Live Chat so we can make a note of this.

What is your lateness policy?

You must arrive on time for all of your lessons. Being on time means you’re in the lesson space when the lesson is due to start, or before it starts.

If you attend all your lessons on time, we'll give you access to more school opportunities.

Remember to launch your lesson in good time, even if you think your pupils will be late.

The system doesn’t know when your pupils are likely to arrive, so if you arrive late you’ll be marked as such - even if you get there before your pupils!

What happens if I’m late for a lesson?

If you’re late for a lesson, we’ll contact you to remind you of our policy and share some tips to help you keep on top of your lessons.

If you’re consistently on time for all your lessons during the 60 days following that email, we’ll reset your lateness warnings.

But if you’re late for more lessons in the 60 days after your first email, we’ll contact you again with a final warning.

And if you continue to be late to further lessons within the 60 days following your final warning, we’ll remove you from the platform and you’ll no longer be able to deliver lessons with us.

I arrived 5 minutes after the start time and I’m no longer able to launch the lesson, what’s happened?

If you haven’t launched the lesson after 5 minutes, we’ll assume that you won’t be attending and we’ll find another tutor to cover your lesson. When this happens, we’ll mark you down as having missed a lesson.

This is different from being late for a lesson.* See our attendance policy above for what this will mean for you, and learn more about our last-minute cover system.

*You’re considered late to a lesson if you arrive after the lesson is due to start (e.g. entering the lesson space at 11:01 to an 11:00 lesson)

What if it’s not my fault?

As a tutor, you’re responsible for attending your lessons on time. That means:

  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection and a working computer ready for your lesson

  • Planning your schedule so you have enough time between your lessons and other commitments (including accounting for bad traffic!)

  • Taking time off if you’re struggling with health or other commitments

  • Letting us know in advance of the lesson if you’re unable to make it (for example if you’re feeling unwell)

These are standard expectations in a professional setting. However, we understand that sometimes things can happen that you can’t control. In these exceptional circumstances, please contact our support team as soon as possible so we can review your situation and help you.
