How do I pick the right pupils for tuition?
How do I pick the right pupils for tuition?

Considerations to keep in mind when picking pupils for your programme.

One-to-One (1:1) Tuition

When choosing your students for one-to-one tuition, we've found it's helpful to think about:

  • Who will benefit most from the extra support? - usually these are disadvantaged pupils who are struggling to catch up, but maybe you also have students who just need that extra push to reach the very top grades.

  • Who will engage best with this initiative? - pupils will benefit most from their MyTutor lessons by showing up on time every week, ready to learn and open to building a relationship with their new tutor. We advise steering away from students with significant behavioural issues, as we find they often struggle to engage with the programme.

Group (3:1) Tuition

The same considerations apply when choosing pupils for three-to-one MyTutor lessons, but there are a few extra things to consider when you’re deciding on groups.

  • Pupil Premium eligibility only qualifies for group tuition

  • Make sure pupils grouped together are all working at a similar level

  • Grouping best friends together can disrupt focus on the lesson, so it’s important to group together pupils who are comfortable with each other but who will knuckle down together too!

  • If a pupil in a group needs replacing, remember to keep these considerations in mind when choosing the new student

Ultimately, you know your pupils best, and we hope that all pupils will enjoy and benefit from sessions with our tutors!

Can MyTutor work with pupils with EAL/SEND needs?

Many pupils with EAL/SEND needs benefit from MyTutor lessons, and we encourage you to think about the specific needs of every pupil.

It may be that our tutors are well-placed to support them, as our compulsory training programme does cover the basic principles of supporting pupils with SEND. Our Pupil Details form also has space for you to add any additional information about individual pupils that you’d like their tutors to be aware of.

But our tutors are not qualified teachers and MyTutor lessons will not be suitable for all pupils with SEND.

If you’re not sure if MyTutor is right for your pupils with SEND, get in touch with us or contact your dedicated Relationship Manager to discuss their specific learning needs.
