What is the Tutor Rep scheme?

An opportunity for tutors to speak directly to people in the MyTutor team and pitch in on projects that are already in motion, and impact the tutor community. One month you could be talking to the marketing team about tutor rewards, the next month to the supply team about work opportunities, and even to the product team about improving our tech.

There’ll be 6 elected tutors who represent the wider community, and make sure your voice is heard.

Here are the top questions you have been asking about the Tutor Rep scheme:

What does being a rep involve?

  • Becoming a friendly face in the community. Helping out other tutors on things from how to engage a student, to where to find resources

  • Taking part in online focus groups with the MyTutor team to bring a vital tutor perspective to projects they’re working on.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to all tutors who are active - aka you’re logging in and have taught a lesson (you don’t need to be actually teaching right now).

What’s the application process?

  1. Upload a 30s video introducing yourself and answering a question

  2. Write an example reply to a tutor on the community asking for help on how to engage a distracted student (50 - 100 words)

  3. Provide your basic details (name, email, gender, subjects you teach, if you’re a private tutor, schools tutor, or both)

You can share the video in a few different ways:

  • Upload it as a file into the application

  • Share it as Google Drive link (make sure sharing access is set to to anyone with the link)

  • Share it as an unlisted YouTube video, which means only people with the link can watch it

From there, 12 tutors will be shortlisted by last year’s reps, and we’ll share the shortlist for you to vote on who you'd like to represent you.

Can I apply to be a rep if I don’t have any students right now?

Yes! As long as you’re active on the site, meaning you’re logging in and looking for work, you’re welcome to apply.

Can I apply if I’m not a member of the MyTutor community?

A big part of being a tutor rep involves becoming a friendly face in the community and chatting with other tutors, so if you haven’t joined already, you’ll need to.

How are reps chosen?

A group of tutors including last year’s reps will review applications and create a shortlist. They’ll use the same criteria to narrow all initial applications down to a shortlist of 12 tutors - which you’ll then be able to vote on.

What are the shortlist criteria?

The shortlisted candidates will be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • A member of the Tutor Community, or willing to join

  • Plan to tutor for at least the duration of the rep scheme

  • Happy to commit to the time & requirements of the rep scheme

  • Their answers showed us that they’re invested in tutoring, confident to speak up in focus groups, and committed to supporting other tutors in the community

All applications will be reviewed by tutors, including your current tutor reps.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications, we won’t be able to offer personalised feedback if you apply but aren’t successful.

What are the timelines?

  • Applications will open on the 4th of September, and close on the 13th of September at 23.59

  • Voting opens on the 23rd September and closes on the 27th September at 23.59

  • The first rep meeting will be on Tuesday 8th October, and we’ll run the scheme until the end of the academic year

What's the time commitment?

You’ll come along to 6x 1 hour-long focus groups, as well as spending around an hour per week chatting with other tutors in the community. You can download the Circle Communities app on your phone, so you can check it like any other social media.

It’s really important that all reps share this commitment. If you suspect you’ll struggle with the commitment then this opportunity might not be for you.

What’s in it for me?

You’ll get invaluable workplace experience (from the comfort of your own home!), a professional endorsement, and that warm fuzzy feeling of giving back to other tutors.

To get paid £200, you’ll need to have:

  • Contributed to all focus groups, with your camera & mic switched on

  • Posted weekly in the new tutor community

  • Completed a feedback survey midway through, and at the end of, the rep scheme

What if I start but can't continue the rep scheme?

We understand sometimes things come up that are unavoidable. However, if you think you may stop tutoring with us in the next 6 months, that your workload won’t be manageable, or are having doubts about your commitment to the scheme, we’d recommend you hold off from applying this time around. You’ll need to complete the scheme to get the £200 at the end.

How can I get involved if I don’t want to be a rep?

There are lots of ways for you to contribute, get your voice heard and make an impact, without working as a rep.

You can:

  • Respond to reps’ community posts

  • Ask a question in the community, for reps and other tutors to reply to

  • Share your feedback by posting in the community

What did the rep scheme achieve last year?

Historically the scheme has played a big part in shaping MyTutor, and some highlights of changes made off the back of rep input include:

  • Becoming more transparent with our communications

  • Launching a tutor-parent referral scheme

  • Upgrading to a new, better lesson space

This year, the rep scheme is shifting. Rather than reps bringing new ideas to MyTutor, they’ll attend focus groups on projects already in the works. So you’ll be consulted in their early stages, rather than after they’ve already taken place.

Why have we made the changes?

We get lots of feedback from tutors every day. Whether that’s from surveys, via our support team, or from posts in the community. Tutor rep meetings are never the first time we’re hearing about what’s important to you.

Until now, that meant rep meetings are spent reiterating your feedback, and we can’t always promise to work on these things right away. At the same time, there are new projects popping up all the time that you don’t always hear about until they go live, and we want to bring your POV in sooner.

And so we’ve changed the tutor rep role from one that gathers and shares existing feedback to one that looks at new projects and shares their perspective.
