Take a look below at the features of our new lesson space!
Tabs
In a Space, you can have three different types of tabs: Document Tab, Whiteboard or Code Tab.
The Whiteboard has many tools such as drawing, shapes, highlight or graph tools. You can upload and annotate PDFs, images and other documents there.
The Document Tab is a collaborative document editor, where you can write and format text documents.
The Code Tab allows you to add and edit code in many different coding languages supporting syntax highlighting and collaborative code editing.
You can also have multiple tabs open at any one time. To create another tab, simply click on the “+” button in the top left corner and select the type of tab you’d like.
Uploading files
You can upload files and learning materials easily to the space. Use the "+" icon in the left-hand corner.
Alternatively, you can use the Upload Image or PDF button on the toolbar menu in a whiteboard or simply drag and drop documents into a whiteboard.
Once a file is uploaded to the whiteboard, you can start annotating using the tools in the toolbar.
Video layouts
You can choose between three different video layouts in the space (see the top of the right sidebar).
The Video Grid enlarges all students’ cameras, the Video Sidebar anchors videos to the right side and Floating Videos lets you drag and drop and resize videos as needed.
Double-click on any video to see the video in full-screen mode.
Managing students in the space
As a tutor, you’ll have various tools available to manage students in the space to help classes run smoothly. All tutors are automatically assigned the "Leader" role in a lesson. Leading Mode is automatically enabled and something we recommend keeping enabled for most lessons.
Here are some ways the tools can be used to manage students in lessons.
Ensure students see what you see. Leading Mode allows you to lock a student into your view, so students see what you see. If you move tab in the space, all students automatically go to that tab. When on a whiteboard, the student follows you as you move – you can see the outline of a student’s view on screen with their name next to it. You can turn off Leading Mode to allow students to work on different questions or parts of the board.
Control all students with a single click. Go to People (by clicking the circle People icons at the top right), then click on the three dots next to Main Room for the ability to mute all microphones, stop all videos or disable/enable editing for all. You can do this for all students or individually.
Disable editing. Easily prevent students from having edit access in the space as needed. Click the 3 dots in the People section and Disable Editing for All to stop students being able to edit the space. You can then give permission to individual students by clicking their name and Enable Editing. You can also manage edit access by clicking the crown icon and turning on Read-Only Mode.
Lock content. Right-click on the name of a tab to lock it or lock the contents. Or lock individual items by clicking Lock on the floating menu next to them.
Screen-sharing
Share your screen directly from the space with just one click (using the third icon from the bottom on the right sidebar).
You can share your entire screen, an application window or a browser tab only (we recommend sharing an application window or browser tab only, to avoid this infinity mirror effect when screen-sharing).
When screen sharing, you’ll automatically enter presenter mode, so if a student shares their screen, make sure to expand it by double-clicking on the shared screen.
Using pre-made resources
You may find some of the pre-made resources useful in lessons. Click Insert Resource to open the Resource Drawer, find a worksheet or image you like, click on it and it will be added to the whiteboard. You can then resize and annotate the material as you like.
Using the infinite whiteboard
The whiteboard can expand infinitely, which is great for flexible teaching; however, you may sometimes lose your place. Centre the content on the board by clicking the Zoom icon and Zoom to Fit. Or bring students to you by making sure Leading Mode is turned on.
