Can I tutor multiple students in a one-to-one private lesson?

I'm a Tutor article! Find out here what our policy is for tutoring multiple pupils in a one-to-one private lesson.

Updated over a week ago

As a private tutor, parents and students might ask you to teach a lesson to multiple students at once. Here's our guidance to help you handle the situation if it comes up.

Ultimately, having more than one student in the lesson space in a private lesson is your choice, and needs to be agreed between you and the parent/students.

But before you decide, we recommend you consider the following:

Lesson Prices

The private price bands are based on one-to-one tutoring. If you'd like to tutor multiple students in the same lesson space, feel free to discuss adjusting your price band with the parent to reflect this change.

Lesson Quality

If multiple students join a one-to-one lesson they won’t be able to join on separate devices, the students would have to share a device.

This can work, but it’s worth considering how much value they’ll get from the lesson. We recommend discussing this with the parent or booking a lesson to try it out together before committing.

Communication with parents

As you're self-employed on the private platform, we encourage you to organise your bookings and price bands based on what’s best for you and your customers. You can discuss things like this with parents/students via messages or in a free meeting.

If you find your student is sharing the lesson with another student without letting you know beforehand, we recommend that you message their parent to discuss the above points.

If you have safeguarding concerns about your students, check out this article on how to report your concerns to MyTutor.
