I'm a Tutor article! Everything you need to know about our Groups courses

Updated over a week ago

Here's everything you need to know about Groups courses:

The application process 📝

How do I sign up?

Each time we run Groups courses we’ll be sure to email suitable tutors in batches with information on how to sign up and a link to the available Groups courses. Once you find a course you’re interested in tutoring, you can sign up on the website - courses will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, so keep an eye on your emails!

Am I guaranteed to get work?

Groups have proven to be very popular and we will try to make the opportunity to teach a Groups course as fair as possible. Sadly, we can’t guarantee that you’ll get work each time, however, courses will be released in batches to maximise your chance of working on Groups.

Who’s eligible to tutor Groups?

We’ve invited tutors who’ve taught 40 or more private lessons with us, have top track records, and teach the subjects which have the highest parent demand.

What does a top track record look like?

A ‘top track record’ means that you’ve received at least a 4* review in 95% of your lessons or more.

What subjects are being offered?

This will vary depending on the time of the year, however, all curriculum subjects will be offered and there will also be the opportunity to teach extracurricular subjects such as coding and book clubs.

When will I find out if I’ve been successfully confirmed on to a course?

When you go onto the MyTutor Groups course page, you will see all the courses you are eligible to teach. After you accept the T&Cs and sign up, the course will be assigned to you, however, confirmation as to whether or not the course goes ahead will depend on the number of spots booked.

Can I tutor more than one course?

Yes! You can sign up to tutor more than one course - just make sure that when you’re signing up for courses, you can fully commit to completing all the lessons. We won’t be replacing tutors or able to reschedule courses or one-off sessions, so please ensure that you can commit to 100% of the sessions you sign up for.

I’ve selected a course and received my confirmation email – what next?

You’ll receive a confirmation email as soon as you’ve selected your course. Within a couple of days, you’ll receive an email containing everything you need to get ready for your course. This will include the link and a passcode that you’ll use to join your group sessions, as well as your Course Guide. We’ll also send you some reminder notifications closer to your course start date.

The Courses 🧠

Will I get any training before I teach the courses?

Before the start of your course, we’ll send you a confirmation email with some instructions and links to all your training materials. This will include a Course Guide (learning outcomes, recommended resources and suggested activities) to help you plan your sessions, and online training to help you prepare for group teaching and learn more about how the lesson space works.

Do I teach and access lessons via MyTutor’s platform?

No – it’s a little different from the MyTutor lesson space, so you can only access it using the link and passcode that we email to you prior to the start of your course. You’ll get a link to try and test the new lesson space before the beginning of the course.

But don’t worry - the space is intuitive, and we’ll send you instructions about how best to connect to and use it. You’ll also get a link to try and test the new lesson space before the beginning of the course.

Why can’t I decide which topics to cover?

We want to make sure all our courses reflect what parents are looking for, which is why we’re recruiting tutors for specific subjects, courses, and themes within them. Whilst we’re providing teaching material, you’re free to run your course as you see fit and adapt it to your pupils' levels. Just make sure to cover the topics outlined to you, as that’s what parents and students are expecting!

How long will the sessions last?

These run from Monday to Friday, 1 hour for each lesson. They take place at the same time each day.

How many students are in a course?

There will be approximately 6 students in each course. The course will need to be booked by a minimum of 3 students for it to go ahead.

What happens if not all pupils turn up?

If some pupils don’t turn up, you should still run the course as normal. Then in the next session, you can share any materials from the previous one with the absent student.

If I can’t make one of the lessons, can I reschedule?

We are not able to reschedule any of the lessons, if you can’t make it to one of the lessons, you should immediately let us know getting in touch, Our live chat is the best and simplest way to get in touch!

It’s important that you let us know in advance so that we can inform the students and parents.

What's the cancellation policy for parents?

Parents can cancel their course booking free of charge if they ask for the change before the Wednesday before the beginning of the course.

What happens if my course gets cancelled?

If the course is cancelled at any time after the Wednesday before its scheduled start, you’ll receive a cancellation fee of 20% of the full week’s payment to compensate for any preparation time.

Payment 💰

How will payment work?

Payment for Groups isn’t considered part of your usual tutor pay, so it will come through as a separate transaction and won’t appear on your income page. You’ll receive a payslip via email, separate from your usual MyTutor payment. This will be paid into your usual bank account.

How often will I be paid?

Just like with 1-1 tutoring payments, this will be every other week.

How much can I earn?

The courses have set price points assigned to them, so when you select your course you will also select the price assigned to it. If all 5 lessons are delivered as expected, we’ll add on a bonus of £50!

Lesson space 👨‍🏫

Can I access the lesson space before my course begins?

Yes! You can test out the lesson space in a demo session here. You’ll also be able to access your lesson space an hour and a half before each session, so you can upload resources or prep the space in advance.

How do I access the lesson space?

You’ll receive a link and passcode to your course lesson space by email – it’ll be the same link for each day of your course. However, the space will renew each day, meaning that anything on the whiteboards will disappear when you go into the next session. But don’t worry – you can still access each day’s session an hour and a half before it starts.

How can I learn how to use the lesson space?

You’ll receive a link to some online training by email. This has lots of useful information on how to use the lesson space, and links to further help.

What happens at the start of a session?

Students can’t enter the space until you arrive – so they’ll be kept on a holding page until you join.

What happens at the end of a session?

Make sure to click ‘end session for all’ at the end of the lesson. This will make sure your students don’t remain in the lesson space without you.

Are sessions recorded?

All sessions are recorded and saved, starting from when you first join the lesson space (even if it’s when you’re prepping). For more information about the lesson space you’ll be using, check out their FAQs here.

Does anything change for group tuition?

For group courses, we work with you a little differently from how we work with you for 1 to 1 lessons.

When you’re tutoring 1-1, you have more control over what you cover and how you structure your lessons. You’re chosen by the parent, set your own hourly rates from the range of bands set by MyTutor, and have a direct relationship with your client.

For Group tutoring, we allocate the tutors and plan out the course topics. Due to these different ways of working, you’ll need to accept some new T&Cs to reflect that your employment status when tutoring Groups courses (Worker) is different from your employment status when tutoring 1 to 1 lessons on the private side of MyTutor (Self-employed).

Your tax status will remain ‘self-employed’ for the purposes of your pay for tutoring carried out for Groups, so you’ll still need to complete your tax return as normal to let HMRC know how much you've earned. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer tax advice, so please seek professional advice or speak to HMRC if you have any questions.

You can read the full T&Cs here.

Safeguarding 🔐

How do you keep lessons safe?

We take online safety seriously at MyTutor and we are committed to ensuring the highest possible standard of safeguarding, for the student and you, our tutor. We'll be securely recording the lessons for safeguarding reasons, the lesson space has features you can use to keep yourself and students safe. You can read more about how in the MyTutor's Safeguarding policy.

How does the lesson space keep the users safe?

The lesson space you’ll be using has various features to make sure lessons are safe. As a tutor you’ll be able to mute or stop a student’s camera, disable their ability to edit the screen, kick out students temporarily or to ban a student from the lesson space if necessary - please do let us know if this is ever the case. You can read more about the lesson space features here.

How can I flag a safeguarding concern?

Safeguarding and pupil welfare is one of MyTutor’s top priorities.

As a tutor working with children, you have a responsibility to pass on concerning information - but you’re not expected to handle this alone.

We have a dedicated Safeguarding team who will handle anything that you report. They’ll deal with each issue sensitively and in complete confidence.

If you have a concern for a pupil, you can read our advice in I’m concerned about a pupil.
