There are a few conditions that your documents need to meet for us to process your DBS application. We've split them out below for the different types of documents.
Proof of address 🏡
This can be a bank/building society statement, credit card statement, utility bill, financial statement, P45 or P60 statement
Your proof of address must:
-
Match your current UK address - this is the address you input as your current address in your application. You can update your current address at any time here.
-
Clearly show the date, address, your name and the logo of the issuer (e.g. your bank)
-
Show the entire first page of the document (we don’t mind if you blank out your account details, but we must be able to see the entire page)
-
Be dated in the last 3 months (apart from financial statements and P45s/P60s, which can be dated in the last 12 months).

First proof of identity 📰
(Passport)
Your passport should:
-
Be valid and current (can be from any country)
-
Not be expiring in the next month
-
Clearly show the entire identity page
-
Not have any glare/reflections over your picture or any of the details.
What if my passport expires in the next month?
You’ll need to apply for a new one - information on how to do this in the UK can be found here.
Don’t worry, we know this can take some time. If you’ve been invited to join as a tutor, reach out to let us know you are applying for a new passport, and we’ll keep your account open. Once you get your new passport, you can continue with your application.
Second proof of identity ❓
(Like a driving licence, biometric residence permit, birth certificate, adoption certificate, marriage/civil partnership certificate)
Your second proof of identity should:
-
Be a UK issued document (except driving licenses, which can be issued by any country)
-
Not expire within the next month (if it’s a driving licences or biometric residence permit. Birth certificates, adoption certificates and marriage/civil partnership certificates can be issued at any time)
-
Clearly show the entire license or document
-
Not have any glare/reflections over your picture, or over any of the details
-
Not be a National ID card - unfortunately, we don’t accept those as a valid proof of identity
What if I don’t have any of these?
We suggest applying for a UK provisional driving license. If you’re an international student studying in the UK, a provisional driving license can be a handy form of ID to have, and we will be able to accept it as a valid second proof of ID.
Information on how to apply for one can be found here.
What if my second proof of identity is expiring within the next month?
You’ll need to apply for a new one. Information on how to renew your UK driving license can be found here, and how to renew your Biometric Residence Permit can be found here.
Don’t worry, we know this can take some time. If you’ve been invited to join as a tutor, reach out to let us know you are applying for a new second proof of identity and we’ll keep your account open. Once you get your new second proof of identity, you can continue with your application.
How can I update my DBS application details?
Just follow this link: https://www.mytutor.co.uk/tutors/secure/ta-options.html
What if I don’t have any of these documents and am unable to get them?
You won't be able to apply for a DBS check through MyTutor, but some other DBS providers accept different document combinations. University student unions can usually point you in the right direction to get a DBS check.
Remember, that to work as a tutor with us, your DBS check must be enhanced and have the ‘Children’s Barred List Information’ requested, as this is a requirement when working with children.
