If you tutor on the parent-facing side of MyTutor, you’ll have noticed we’ve recently asked you to apply for an enhanced DBS check. This article should answer any questions you have about this change to our policy.
I’ve been tutoring on MyTutor for years - why is this changing now?
Having a DBS check has always been a requirement for our school tutors, but you’re right that it’s a new one for tutors on the parent-facing side of the platform. We take safeguarding really seriously, and making sure all our tutors are DBS checked has now become a mandatory way for us to ensure the safety of pupils using MyTutor, regardless of which side of the platform they use.
The good news is you’ll get a ‘Enhanced DBS’ sticker on your profile, making you a more trusted tutor to parents, plus you’ll be eligible to work on our Schools Programme should you want to. It can also come in handy for any future jobs that require one.
Do I have to pay for the DBS check?
Yes, but to make it a little more manageable, we’ll front the full cost of it for you and you’ll pay back the £38 in £3.80 instalments per lesson you complete.
How long is a DBS check valid for?
A DBS check has no official expiry date, but to work with us you’ll need one that’s 4 years old or less, and renew it every 4 years should you want to continue tutoring after that point.
Can I use a valid DBS check I already have?
Yes! If you have a DBS check that’s less than 4 years old, please send a copy of it to us at email@example.com. If it’s older than 4 years, you’ll need to apply for a new one.
My student or their parent doesn’t care if I have a DBS check or not - do I still need to get one?
Yes, you do. As of 1st September, every tutor - regardless of which side of the platform they’re on - will need a DBS check to remain on the platform.
Why do other platforms not require me to have a DBS check?
Different tutoring platforms have different safeguarding policies, and there’s no hard and fast rule about these types of requirements. Here at MyTutor though, we take safeguarding really seriously. So to ensure the safety of all our pupils - regardless of whether they’re on the school or parent-facing side of the platform - we now require all our tutors to have a DBS check.
Can I work on the Schools Programme whilst my check is being processed?
To work on the Schools Programme, you’ll need a complete enhanced DBS check - so you’ll have to wait for our third party background checker, Verifile, to confirm it before we can let you tutor with schools. You can however continue working on the parent-facing side of MyTutor as normal.
Why is the website asking me to agree to school pricing?
Having an enhanced DBS check means you’re eligible to work on the Schools Programme, which is why you’ll see some additional information about it when you apply for yours - agreeing to this pricing doesn’t mean you have to work on the Schools Programme.
