We have several analysts here at MyTutor who are always monitoring school and parent demand against tutor supply. Typically demand starts to increase from November, and really gets going in January and February ahead of exam season. Things like the National Tutoring Programme, school closures and changes to assessments all impact school and parent demand, and we often receive new information and data that impacts our recruitment strategy. There are a few reasons why it’s important we predict things as precisely as possible.
What are the risks of undersupplying the platform?
We never want to be in a situation where we don’t have enough tutors to provide work for parents and schools. As it can take some time for tutors to go from signing up to tutoring on the platform (because of things like booking an interview and getting a DBS check), we start recruiting for new tutors ahead of the expected peak in demand.
What are the risks of oversupplying the platform?
We also never want to have more tutors than we need on the site - that leads to a negative experience for tutors, making them less likely to stick around. This is bad news for us, because we want all our users to have a good impression of MyTutor; plus it costs us money per tutor we recruit, so oversupplying the platform is something we try hard to avoid. However it’s inevitable that sometimes we will have more tutors than we need, like during school holidays or the start of the academic year.
How can I get more school work?
We’re sorry if you haven’t had as many tutoring opportunities as you’d like. Sometimes it can take schools longer than expected to get their programmes up and running, and we anticipate you’ll see more slots appearing over the next few months (rather than a sudden influx of them).
We’re making improvements to the way we send you opportunities, to make sure we get the right slots to tutors who want them - in the meantime we’d recommend boosting your profile and filling out your availability accurately. That lets us know you're looking for work and helps us match you with the best opportunities.
