Removing old pricing - everything you need to know

I'm a Tutor article! Here are some answers to your questions regarding the removal of old price bands for private tutors

Updated over a month ago

In the past, we’ve often given you the option to keep your customers on old rates. But that’s left us with over 200 price and level combinations, which is becoming very difficult to process. The sheer complexity slows us down when building new features and fixes for you.

So from the 6th of January 2025, we’ll be removing any old pricing you’ve set for customers you’re working with.

Supporting you to continue working with loyal customers is a top priority for us. We spoke to a subset of affected tutors and customers to understand what we could do to minimise disruption for everyone.

Why are you doing this?

When updating pricing in the past, we’ve often given our tutors the option to keep customers they’re working with on old rates so you can continue working together.

But that’s left us with over 200 price and level combinations, which is becoming very difficult to process. So we’ve decided to remove old pricing, to simplify things for customers, tutors and the business.

How does removing old pricing help tutors?

The sheer complexity of price and level combinations slows us down significantly when building new features and fixes for you.

By removing old pricing, we can spend less time working around this intricacy and more time bringing you the new features you’re asking for.

Plus, it gives you the chance to update your pricing. In most jobs, your salary can increase to reflect your developing skills. Considering the needs of your customers is important, but if you have more lessons, reviews, and happy students compared to this time last year, it might be time to increase your pricing.

How do I change the price band for a specific customer?

To save you time, we’ll automatically move your customer to the band closest to what they’re paying currently, from our most up-to-date bands.

But you can always move individuals to a specific price band of your choice at any time.

  1. Log in and select My Prices from the drop-down menu in the top right corner

  2. Scroll down to the section: Creating exceptions for existing students

  3. Click Change in the Edit column

  4. Select a new price band and click Save

When changing your prices, always speak to customers before taking action so they’re aware before any charges occur.

What are the new bands?

You can find a breakdown of our current price bands on this page in our Help Centre.

What if I don’t pick one?

We’ll automatically move your customer to the band closest to what they’re paying currently, from our most up-to-date bands.

When will it default?

We’re planning to remove old pricing on the 6th of January 2025. We’ll give you and your customers advance notice of the specific date.

What if my parents can’t afford the new pricing? / What if my customer leaves the platform?

We don't want to put tutoring out of reach for anyone, so if you feel that your customers won’t be able to continue paying for lessons at a price from our current bands, please contact us here and we’ll work something out.

Here are some pointers from other tutors to handle those conversations:

  • The key to handling tricky conversations about price with customers is to be confident in your own position and show understanding. Tutoring is a big financial commitment for them, just as it’s a time and effort commitment for us.

  • When customers ask whether there’s room for manoeuvre with the price, I always mention the MyTutor band system and that my price band reflects my experience and capabilities.

  • Remember, customers will be told about any price updates directly by MyTutor, so what you’re telling them shouldn’t be news. If it is, you can direct them to their emails to find all the information.

  • If you’re decreasing your price, emphasise to parents that you’re choosing to do this.

  • If you’re increasing your prices, always speak to customers before cancelling and rebooking. Approach the conversation with empathy and lean on your experience. Showing up as positive and empathetic will help conversations run smoother.

  • Some tutors like to offer more personal reasons regarding price increases, such as needing the income for rent or tuition. It’s definitely an option if it helps you feel confident justifying your price.

You could send a message that says something like:

“Hi (parent), hope you’re well. I wanted to drop you a message following MyTutor’s announcement that lesson prices are changing. I found out at the same time as you, so I’m just getting my head around it too!

To update to the new prices, we need to cancel and rebook our lessons together. With my growing experience and lovely reviews following results day, I’m confident that the new price still reflects my skills as a tutor.

Lastly, I wanted to reassure you that (student’s name)’s progress is still my top priority. It was a pleasure tutoring them last year, and I’m excited to continue. If you have any concerns or need help with the rebooking process, I’m here to help.”

Don’t forget to ask other tutors for help in the community if you have any questions.

Can I move my customer to the new pricing sooner?

Yes, because the price band(s) you choose are completely up to you. Here’s all you’d need to do:

Speak to your customer before taking action. Give them as much notice as you can, and communicate the reasons/justifications so that nobody feels blindsided. Approach the conversation with empathy and lean on your experience.

  1. Log in and select My Prices from the drop-down menu in the top right corner

  2. Scroll down to the section: Creating exceptions for existing students

  3. Click Change in the Edit column

  4. Click Delete*

  5. Cancel your lessons & rebook your lessons

*If you don’t set a new price band exception for this customer, in future they’ll pay the price band currently stated on your profile.
