I'm a Tutor article! Learn more about our price bands for private tutors.

Updated over 2 months ago

On the private side of the platform, tutors are “self-employed” and set their own tutoring fee from our 5 price bands.

We set these 5 bands to:

  • Allow experienced tutors the opportunity to earn more

  • Make tuition accessible for more families with a low starting price-point

  • Simplify the choice for parents considering tuition

To find out more about the platform fee that we charge parents, check out this article.

What are the new pricing & earning bands for private lessons?

As of the 3rd of September, the rates below will apply to all new bookings with new customers.

And to re-cap what's changing:

For new customers from the 3rd of September, you’ll earn more per lesson at every band and level. Because we’re increasing the cost of lessons for customers (on average by £4)

You’ll still set your own price, choosing from 5 bands, and will stay on the same band unless you decide to change it.

For customers you’re already working with, we’ll automatically apply price exceptions. So they’ll continue paying the same price they have been, and you’ll continue to earn the same amount too, indefinitely (regardless of cancellations).

  • If you already have lessons booked and want to charge the customer the new rates, you’ll need to delete the exception and ask the customer to cancel and rebook.

  • If you don’t have lessons booked yet but want to charge the customer the new rates on future lessons, you’ll only need to delete the exception.

Should I move up a band?

You can select the band you feel is most appropriate for you to charge. And if you have more lessons, reviews, and happy students compared to this time last year, it might be time to move up.

If you’re stuck, it’s useful to take a look at what other tutors with your level of experience are charging.

Also, it’s a good idea to consider changing your price band ahead of September so you don’t cause disruption during the academic year.

You can find out more about moving up a band here.

How do I change my band?

You can see the full breakdown of different bands and change yours on your Prices page when you log in to your MyTutor account.

How do I get more private work?

The best ways to pick up extra private lessons are to:

  • Boost your profile

  • Keep your availability up-to-date

  • Add all the subjects you’re eligible to tutor to your profile.

  • Other things parents love are quick responders, tutors who complete lesson reports, and tutors with a profile video.

According to our calculations, parents are 30% more likely to book a lesson with a tutor who responds to their message within 2 hours.

How do I make a price band exception?

As a tutor, the fee you charge for your time might change.

Maybe we’ve changed the band structure you can choose from, or you’ve built up experience and want to charge more.

Whatever the reason, a price exception protects a family you’re working with from future price changes. They’ll continue paying the price they are at the time you set it, and your earnings will stay the same too.

This exception will stay in place for all future lessons with that customer. It doesn’t matter if our platform fee or your tutoring fee changes in the future. The customer will always pay the price you set with your exception.

To do this, log into your account and head to your ‘My Prices’ page. You’ll see the option under ‘Creating exceptions for existing students’.
