As part of the Platform Operators Regulations, MyTutor is required to collect and report certain tutor information to HMRC.
Why does MyTutor need my National Insurance number?
MyTutor needs your National Insurance number because new legislation requires digital platforms like MyTutor to provide an annual report to HMRC on individuals earning through their platforms.
Your National Insurance number helps us provide accurate information as part of this reporting requirement. You can read more about the legislation here.
Do I need to provide my National Insurance number?
All tutors are required to provide their National Insurance number as part of MyTutor’s HMRC reporting requirements. Since June 2025, this has been a mandatory part of the tutor onboarding process, so tutors who joined after this change will have provided this information during onboarding.
Tutors who joined before this change may have been contacted separately if we needed this information.
How do I find my National Insurance number?
You can find your National Insurance number on:
your payslip
your P60 form
HMRC correspondence
You can also follow guidance here, from HMRC, to find your National Insurance number.
What if you don’t have a National Insurance number?
If you do not have a National Insurance number, you may need to apply for one through HMRC here.
This may apply if you were never issued one when you turned 16 or if you are an international student who has not yet applied for one.
What happens if I don’t provide my National Insurance number?
If you do not provide your National Insurance number when required, MyTutor may be unable to include your information in our report to HMRC.
If we cannot collect the required information, we may need to restrict your access to work on the platform.
Does MyTutor handle my taxes now?
No. MyTutor does not handle your taxes. You are still responsible for managing your own taxes.
This reporting requirement does not change your self-employed status or your tax obligations. For guidance on managing your taxes, please see our tax guidance article.
What information will be reported?
MyTutor will report information required by HMRC as part of the Platform Operators Regulations, including:
your National Insurance number
your name
your address
your total income earned through MyTutor during the reporting period
Is my data secure?
Yes. MyTutor follows strict data protection standards to keep your information secure.
Your information will only be shared with HMRC where required by law.
