How do I charge my current customers at the new, increased prices?

For customers you currently have lessons with, we'll automatically apply price exceptions. So if you do nothing, they'll continue paying the same price they have been, and you'll continue to earn the same amount too.

Please discuss this change with your customers in advance. Many parents will have been told that their current lesson price will remain the same if sessions are already booked, so it's important to be transparent and fair when making adjustments.

You'll need to remove the price exception by:

  1. Going to your My Prices page

  2. Scrolling down to Creating Exceptions for Existing Students

  3. Finding the customer you want to update and clicking Change

  4. Select Delete to remove the exception

  • Then ask the customer to cancel their existing lessons and rebook them.

  • Once lessons are rebooked and the price exception no longer exists, customers will automatically be charged the new price, and you'll be paid accordingly.

Remember: Always let customers know before making any changes to their booking or price. Sudden changes without notice can damage trust and your working relationship.

For tips on how to have these conversations, join the discussion in the tutor community.

How do I keep my current customers at their current price?

Lessons won't automatically increase in price on the 19th of August 2025 because we're automatically creating price exceptions for existing customers, that you have lessons with.

This means that your existing customers will continue paying the same price they have been paying, and you'll continue to earn the same amount too, indefinitely (regardless of cancellations). This exception will stay in place for all future lessons with that customer. It doesn't matter if our platform fee or your tutoring fee changes in the future. The customer will always pay the price you set with your exception.

What is a price exception?

A price exception protects a family you're working with from future price changes. They'll continue paying the price they are at the time you set it and your pay will stay the same too.

This exception will stay in place for all future lessons with that customer. It doesn't matter if our platform fee or your tutoring fee changes in the future. The customer will always pay the price you set with your exception.

Why do we need price exceptions?

As a tutor, the fee you charge for your time might change.

Maybe we've changed the band structure you can choose from, or you've built up experience and want to charge more. Or maybe you want to open yourself up to more customers by charging less.

Whatever the reason, a price exception allows you to keep a customer on the price they're paying before you make a change, indefinitely.

How do I make a price exception?

Make a price exception for parents by logging into your account, opening the 'My Prices' page, and selecting 'Creating exceptions for existing students'.

If you make a price exception, it'll stay in place for all future lessons with that customer, regardless of any changes to our platform fee or your tutoring fee.

Remember, you don't need to make a price exception for existing customers, as they'll be created automatically on August 19th.

What happens if I don't make a price exception?

For customers you currently have lessons with, we'll automatically apply price exceptions. So they'll continue paying the same price they have been, and you'll continue to earn the same amount too, indefinitely (regardless of cancellations).

Can I keep my current price for new customers?

No, as of the 19th of August, all new lessons will automatically be charged at the new rates.

How can I handle customers who want me to keep their current price?

We told customers that the price of their lessons may increase. They might ask that you continue charging them the same price - how you handle this is up to you.

We told customers that prices have increased to maintain our quality of service and support to all our customers, and to make sure tutors are paid fairly for their work. If you want to raise your pricing, you can also emphasise your growing experience and glowing reviews to justify the increase in price.

Experienced tutor, Izzi, shared her top tips for handling conversations about pay here. You can also ask for more personalised support by asking other tutors in our community here.

If you want to honour your price for existing customers, you don't need to do anything. Price exceptions will automatically be created for existing customers, so they won't be charged more unless the exception is deleted, and lessons are cancelled and rebooked. Remember, tutoring your MyTutor clients in any capacity outside of MyTutor is against our rules. If you share your contact details, accept a parent's or discuss taking tutoring off the platform, you'll have breached our code of conduct and created a safeguarding risk, which can lead to both of your accounts being permanently closed.

If a parent asks to work with you off the platform, you can explain that you only tutor through MyTutor due to the protection we offer around pay and safeguarding, which lets you focus on tutoring.

If you have a customer with a recurring booking charged at a price lower than the one you have currently set, we encourage you to create a price exception to protect that pricing, should either of you need to cancel and rebook.

Have you told customers about this?

Yes. We outlined how our pricing is changing, as well as the reasons why. We also reassured them that they can get in touch with our support team if they're worried that the price change is putting tutoring out of reach for their family. You can find their announcement email here.

Note:
This table shows the price increase for parents- that is, how much more parents will be charged per hour for tutoring based on the new rates. It does not represent the tutors’ take-home pay or their earnings.

Why am I seeing different rates on the FAQs articles than what I saw in the emails? What are customers seeing?

The new rates will be updated across our website and FAQ pages once they take effect. Until then, both tutors and customers will see our current rates.

If you want your pay rate to update after the 19th of August, you'll need to delete the price exception for the customer and then ask them to cancel and rebook lessons.

Why are you changing the pricing now?

We review our pay and pricing every summer, when it's quieter on the platform. That way, when the new term starts, customers can get started with the new rates. They can plan ahead and not worry about anything changing in the near future.

Where does the MyTutor fee go?

You can read more about what the fee is invested in specifically here.

How do I get more private work?

Please read this article to find out more about finding private work opportunities.

How will rescheduled lessons be affected?

When you reschedule a booking, it remains an existing booking, and all existing recurring bookings will stay at the current price, unless the customer's price exception is deleted, and their lessons are cancelled and rebooked.

So if customers booked the lessons before the 19th of August, even if they reschedule it for a date after then, it'll remain at the original price.

Even lessons that are cancelled and rebooked will be charged at the existing rates, unless you delete the price exception.

What happens to customers already on a price band exception?

If you already have customers on a price band exception, they won't be affected by this change, and your earnings will stay the same. A price band exception stays in place for all future lessons with that customer, regardless of whether our platform fee or your tutoring fee changes.

Remember to let customers know before making changes to their lesson booking and price. We know it's a difficult conversation, but not doing so can damage their trust and your working relationship.

I didn't get an email, where can I see it?

We’re sorry you didn’t get the email. Because we send them all at once, any tutors that have just joined, or are still in the process of joining, may not receive it. Don’t worry, you can find the announcement email here.

School Lessons

Why is School pay not changing this year?

We increased School pay on 1st April 2025, in line with the rise in the National Living Wage. There won't be another increase this year because the funding landscape has shifted. With the end of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP), schools have tighter budgets. To keep tuition affordable and accessible for pupils, we've decided not to increase school tutor pay at this time.
