How do I troubleshoot the lesson space?

This article covers quick fixes and troubleshooting steps for common lesson space issues.

What are the quick fixes for lesson space issues?

The quick fixes for lesson space issues include:

  • Use Google Chrome: Chrome is the best browser for lessons. If you are using an iPad, you’ll need to use Safari.

  • Check for updates: Make sure your computer software and browser are using the most up-to-date versions.

  • Check your sound: Make sure your computer is not muted and that the correct sound device is selected. We recommend using a wired headset.

  • Check your internet connection: A stable internet connection is important for lessons. See our internet connection troubleshooting article for more tips.

  • Use landscape mode: If you are using a tablet, try using it in landscape mode.

  • Check Setup > Troubleshooting: Within the lesson space, go to Setup > Troubleshooting to check whether everything is working correctly. A little ! icon on your video box usually indicates if something is not working properly.

  • Check the other person's connection: The Troubleshooting menu can also show you what the student or pupil you are teaching might be struggling with. Click on their name in the Troubleshooting menu to help them figure out the issue on their side.

  • Restart your computer: Sometimes that really is the answer!

How do I launch a lesson in the lesson space?

To launch a lesson in the lesson space:

  • For private lessons, tutors and students can find their lessons by going to their Bookings tab.

  • School pupils will find their lessons when they log in to their MyTutor account.

  • Click “Launch” to enter the lesson space.

What should I do if I can't launch the lesson space?

If you can't launch the lesson space, try the following:

  • Refresh the page around 10 minutes before your lesson. The Launch button does not become active until shortly before the lesson.

  • Joining a lesson space does not require any separate logins or downloads.

  • Use the most recent version of Chrome on Windows, Linux or Mac devices, or Safari on iOS devices.

  • A symmetrical internet connection of at least 5 Mbit/s is recommended.

  • Make sure you grant the correct browser permissions when joining a lesson space.

For private lessons, also check that the lesson status is Confirmed. If the lesson status is Awaiting payment or Awaiting confirmation, the lesson cannot be launched.

Why can't I hear my student or pupil, or why can't they hear me?

If you can't hear your student or pupil, or they can't hear you, try the following:

  • Check your device settings. Make sure the correct audio output, such as speakers or headphones, and the correct microphone are selected on your device. On Windows, you can adjust these settings via the system tray. On Mac, use System Settings.

  • Check your browser permissions. In Chrome, click the padlock icon in the address bar and make sure your microphone and sound switches are enabled. For Safari, check that the speaker icon is blue and that sound is switched on.

  • Test your audio on another website. Try using a site such as YouTube to confirm whether the issue is with your device or browser.

  • Use wired headphones or a microphone. Wired headphones can improve sound quality and help avoid Bluetooth connection issues.

  • Clear your cache and cookies. Deleting your browsing history, cache and cookies can sometimes resolve technical issues.

  • Restart your device. Restarting your computer, iPad or router can solve many underlying technical issues.

Why can't I see my student or pupil, or why can't they see me?

If you can't see your student or pupil, or they can't see you, try the following:

  • Check that your camera isn't physically covered. For example, make sure a lens cover isn't blocking it.

  • Check that your camera or microphone isn't being used elsewhere. Make sure it isn't open in another tab or application.

  • Check Third-Party Filter, Antivirus, or Firewall applications. These can sometimes block your device from using your camera or microphone.

  • Test your camera using another app. If you can't see yourself, there may be a fault with the camera itself.

  • Restart your computer. If you have time, this can solve a lot of problems!

If your camera or microphone is still not working, check that your browser can access them. If you have accidentally blocked Lessonspace from accessing your camera or microphone, you will see a little red cross through your camera in the URL bar at the top of the lesson space.

Click on the camera icon. You’ll be asked to allow Lessonspace access to your camera and microphone. Select “Always allow” and reload your page. Once reloaded, you’ll rejoin the Space, and everything should work.
