Where do MyTutor fees go?
Where do MyTutor fees go?

I'm a Tutor article! Learn more about how and where we invest our fees.

Updated this week

We charge parents & schools a platform fee, which we invest back into running and improving MyTutor.

In terms of running MyTutor, here’s what it pays for:

  • Finding customers for you. We advertise on your behalf, so you don’t have to. Our Marketing team makes sure MyTutor is a household name and shows up online whenever families are looking for help. The time and money they invest gives you access to an enormous potential customer base across the UK from the get-go.

  • Helping you get started. Our Tutors team covers tutor recruitment, selection and training. They set you up for success on our Schools Programme.

  • Supporting customers every step of the way. Our Tutor Matching and Customer Support teams link you up with potential customers. Although we're one of the biggest providers in the business, we want everyone who uses MyTutor to feel like an individual. That's why we offer personalised support with everything from choosing a tutor to setting up lessons.

  • Helping you manage your business. You can also count on our Tutor Customer Support team to help you with any questions or problems. We know that having someone to chat with is reassuring when working remotely). They’re here to support you with your application, scheduling, payments etc.

  • Making MyTutor the best job for uni students and grads. Every week our Tutors team shares training, best practices and resources. They get your voice heard through initiatives like our Tutor Community and Tutor Rep scheme, giving you a direct impact on MyTutor’s development. You’ve got them to thank for things like our performance-based pay scheme.

  • Keeping lessons safe & compliant. Our Safeguarding and Legal teams are vital in guaranteeing that every student and tutor enjoys a safe and legally compliant learning experience. This includes DBS disbursements, safeguarding checks and vetting, maintaining a secure online learning platform and a team on hand to support you in difficult situations.

  • Sorting your pay. Traditionally tutors would have to invoice every customer on a monthly basis, which would involve paperwork, admin, and often chasing and checking multiple payments. Our Finance team pays you for all of your lessons in one go, every two weeks.

And much more!

In terms of improving MyTutor…

We reinvest part of what we make into making the platform bigger and better.

Besides fixing problems and maintaining platform security, our Developers, Designers and Product Managers are constantly transforming tutor and customer feedback into new features.

Here’s what we’ve done so far, and what we’ve got coming up.

In 2023 we…

  • Introduced a new lesson space that gives you more flexibility and control over your lessons, and makes lessons more engaging for your students.

  • Made it possible for new tutors to record answers to interview questions in their own time, so it’s quicker and easier for them to get started.

  • Built a tutor pay calculator so you can easily work out how much you'll earn in a given week.

In 2024 we've been focusing on making tutoring accessible to the next generation of students.

This year we've…

  • Been creating a new option for customers (to bring you more opportunities). It’ll be hosted on a new website that we’ve built from scratch, using the best bits we’ve learnt over the years and improving the parts you’ve told us could be better.

  • Improved your tutoring tools to make them more flexible and easy for you to use.

  • Updated school lesson reports so they’re easier for you to complete, and for teachers to interpret at a glance. Teachers are busy, and when they can clearly see their pupils’ progress, they’re far more likely to work with you (and us) again.

  • Introduced a Tutor Rewards scheme to recognise your hard work

What's next on the horizon?

Here's just some of what's coming next.

  • Inviting more and more tutors to try out our new customer product and website, so all private tutors can secure more consistent work.

  • New school tutoring opportunities, like SEND lessons and cover lessons (which won’t look too shabby on your CV).

We're also thinking about how we can improve tutor training, make it easier for parents to book regular lessons and recommend us to their friends.

Tell us what you'd like to see next

We've made most of these changes based on feedback from tutors, teachers, parents and students - and we always want to hear more. If you haven't shared already (or if you've got more you'd like to spill), let us know in the tutor community. Thanks for coming on this journey with us!
