Instant Book

I'm a Tutor article! Learn more about our new feature Instant Book.

Updated this week

Instant book is a new system for booking lesson requests without the need for a tutor to confirm. That’s great for our tutor expert team and for parents, because they know for sure they have a guaranteed tutor at the time they’ve selected for their first lesson. And it’s faster access to work for you too!

So how does it work? Our tutor expert team works with the new parent on the phone to find a time for a first lesson, they’ll then book that lesson in with a tutor who has instant booking activated at that time - no confirmation needed from the tutors. Tutors will then receive a notification that they’ve received an instant booking and the next step is for both tutor and parent to turn up on time for that first lesson.

How do I activate Instant Book?

In order to activate instant book you’ll need to boost your profile, specifically for our Private platform. When you boost for ‘Private’ or ‘Both’ it will automatically give you the option to activate instant book and add your availability for instant bookings.

To learn more about boosting check out our dedicated article.

Can I boost on the private side and not be available for Instant Book?

No, you can't be unavailable for Instant Book, you’ll have to set some availability.

If you’re not comfortable with being booked on short notice then we’d recommend setting your advance notice to 24 hours so you have plenty of time to prepare.

How do I set my availability?

After you’ve boosted, continue through the flow and you’ll see a screen with a view of the next 7 days. Simply click to select the timeslots that you’re available for instant first lesson bookings.

It’s very important that you get your availability right, because parents will have already paid for the lesson, and will be expecting you to be there, on time.

How much advance notice can I be booked in for?

Options range from 1 hour’s notice to 24 hour’s notice. Our team will not be able to Instantly Book you for a session with any less than the advance notice that you’ve set.

How will I know if I’ve been booked via Instant Book?

You’ll get a confirmation email with details about the lesson such as subject and start time. You’ll also see the lesson appear on your bookings page.

Why do I have to select exam boards? Or texts?

A bunch of you have told us that exam boards are really important when it comes to matching for a lesson, and we want you to feel confident that you’ll be given lessons you can teach. Our team will only be looking to use Instant Book with you for subjects, levels and exam boards that you’ve told us you can teach. That way, you won’t get an instant booking that you have to cancel, because you don’t teach that exam board.

We won’t accept excessive cancellations of instant bookings, so please make sure you can tutor at the times you set. There’s one exception to this, we don’t currently have a way of collecting English Literature texts, so if you do get an English Literature booking, we ask that you quickly check if you can tutor it, and if you can’t, cancel the instant booking. In these cases, cancellations won’t count against you.

What happens if I cancel an Instant Book lesson?

We expect you to show up to your instant book lessons out of fairness to the wider community of tutors looking for work, and for the parents and learners who are eager to get their tutoring journey started.

Cancellations and no-shows result in customers leaving MyTutor, and that means less work for our other tutors. So if we do see you cancelling often (except in the case of English Literature texts), we’ll be in touch to warn you.

However, we do know that sometimes circumstances change, and if you want to cancel the lesson, and it’s more than 24 hours before the lesson starts, you can cancel from your MyTutor account.

  • Go to your Bookings page

  • Click Edit

  • Click Cancel lesson by the lesson you want to cancel.

You can double-check a booking has been cancelled by refreshing your bookings page.

How much will I get paid for an Instant Book lesson?

You’ll be paid the same as you would for any other private lessons, according to the price band you have set for yourself and on our regular payment schedule.

If there’s not enough information about my Instant Book lesson, what do I do?

Once you’re booked then you’ll be able to message the parent and ask for anything you think is missing to help you prepare for the lesson.

If I don’t want to boost on the private side, will it affect my Priority Status?

Priority status is linked to your school lessons ONLY.

So if you want to boost on the school platform but not on the private platform, select 'Schools' only on the boost workflow. This will allow you to boost on the school platform without signing up for instant booking.
