How do I change or reschedule a school lesson?

I'm a Tutor article! See what to do if you can’t make a school lesson, or if a pupil is asking to make changes, and you want to reschedule.

How do I make changes to a school lesson?

Attendance is really important for making your school lessons a success. However, we understand that sometimes you or your pupil may need to make changes to an upcoming school lesson.

What you need to do depends on:

  • Whether you or your pupil wants to make the change.

  • Whether the pupil is studying a KS3, GCSE or A-level subject.

  • Whether the lesson is a 3-to-1 lesson.

Whichever level the pupil is studying, it is always best practice to reschedule or request cover as soon as possible.

Important: Your Upcoming Bookings show the lessons you are expected to attend, so always attend lessons as they appear in your bookings.

If you think a lesson should have been rescheduled or should no longer be showing, let us know as soon as possible.

What should I do if I can't make a KS3 or GCSE school lesson?

If you cannot make a KS3 or GCSE school lesson, you can request cover so that another tutor can teach the lesson in your place.

For full information about requesting cover, including how to submit a cover request and when cover may not be available, see the How do school cover lessons work? article below.

What should I do if I can't make an A-level school lesson?

If you cannot make an A-level school lesson, message your pupil as soon as possible to agree a new date and time.

Even if you agree on a new time during the lesson, you must confirm the change in your MyTutor messages.

Once you have agreed a new time with your pupil, let us know by contacting us via live chat. Include:

  • The pupil’s name.

  • The details of the original lesson.

  • The new date and time of the lesson.

We recommend giving your A-level pupil up to 3 hours before the lesson to respond. If they have not replied by then, contact us via live chat.

What should I do if my KS3 or GCSE pupil wants to change a lesson?

For a KS3 or GCSE school lesson, the pupil needs to ask their teacher to make the change.

Their teacher will then contact us to confirm the change, if it's possible, and our team will reschedule the lesson.

As a tutor, you should not arrange the change directly with the pupil.

What should I do if my A-level pupil wants to change a lesson?

For an A-level school lesson, your pupil can ask you directly to make a change.

Message your pupil as soon as possible to agree a new date and time.

Can a 3-to-1 school lesson be rescheduled?

3-to-1 school lessons cannot be rescheduled, regardless of whether the pupils are studying KS3, GCSE or A-level subjects.

If a pupil needs to make a change to a 3-to-1 school lesson, they should speak to their teacher.

The teacher will then contact MyTutor if a change is needed.

If you are unable to attend a 3-to-1 school lesson, follow the usual process for requesting cover.
