What are the different types of school lessons?

You might see different terms when browsing school opportunities. These describe the pupil's level, the type of booking, and how many pupils you'll teach:

What are KS3, GCSE and A-level lessons?

These describe the key stage or qualification level of the pupil you’ll be teaching.

Knowing the pupil's level will help you understand what you’ll be teaching and plan your lessons appropriately.

What are recurring slots?

These are ongoing weekly lessons with the same school and pupil or pupils. They usually run for a block of 6–10 weeks, with one lesson each week.

Only accept a recurring slot if you can commit to the full schedule.

What are cover slots?

These are one-off or temporary lessons covering an existing booking when the usual tutor is unable to teach.

What do 1-1 and 3-1 mean?

This tells you how many pupils you’ll teach in each lesson:

  • 1-1: one tutor teaching one pupil.

  • 3-1: one tutor teaching three pupils.

A school opportunity can be a combination of these different types. For example, you might see a 3-1 GCSE cover slot or a 1-1 A-level recurring slot.

All school lessons are 55 minutes long.

Before you accept a school opportunity

Before accepting a school opportunity, make sure you can attend every scheduled lesson included in the booking. For recurring lessons, pupils benefit from having the same tutor each week. Only accept a recurring slot if you can commit to the full schedule.

What are recurring slots and cover slots?

School opportunities are available in two formats:

Recurring Slots

Ongoing weekly lessons with the same school.

Cover Slots

One-off or temporary lessons covering an existing booking.

Can school lessons change?

Yes, schools may occasionally ask us to reschedule lessons or adjust the timetable.

If this happens, we will notify you as soon as possible.

We aim to avoid making any changes close to the scheduled lesson time.
