Tutor interview: Preparation, process and next steps

I'm a Tutor article! Getting ready to record your interview videos? Here’s everything you need to know about getting the timing just right.

After completing your tutor application, you’ll be invited to complete a tutor interview.

Once you click “Start”, you’ll have 7 days to complete the recording process.

Your interview takes place through Willo, MyTutor’s interview recording partner. During the interview, you’ll complete a digital ID check, answer questions about yourself, and record a teaching Q&A to help us understand your tutoring skills and experience.

How do I prepare for my tutor interview?

Before starting your interview, make sure you have:

  • Your physical ID documents ready.

  • A smartphone available for the digital ID check.

  • A device with a working camera and microphone.

  • A reliable internet connection.

You can complete your interview using a phone, tablet, or computer.

You can also complete a practice video on Willo before starting. Practice videos are not visible to MyTutor and are only available to help you become familiar with the recording process.

Interviews can feel nerve-wracking, but you do not need to be perfect. We want to learn more about you, your subject knowledge, and your approach to tutoring.

What happens when I start my tutor interview?

When you start your interview, Willo will guide you through each stage of the process.

You will complete:

  1. A digital ID check.

  2. Interview questions about you and your suitability for tutoring.

  3. A teaching Q&A where you demonstrate your tutoring approach.

How do I complete the digital ID check?

The first part of your interview is a digital ID check.

You will need:

  • Your physical passport or share code.

  • A second form of photo ID, such as a provisional or full driving licence.

  • A smartphone.

If you are a UK or Irish citizen, you will need:

  • Your passport.

  • A provisional or full driving licence.

  • A smartphone.

If you are not a UK or Irish citizen, you will need:

  • Your passport.

  • Your share code to prove your right to work in the UK.

  • A provisional or full driving licence.

  • A smartphone.

You must have your physical documents ready before starting the digital ID check. If you cannot provide the required documents, your ID check will fail, and you will not be able to continue with your tutor application.

You can only complete the digital ID check once, so make sure you are ready before starting.

How do I complete the teaching Q&A?

As part of your interview, you’ll prepare and record yourself teaching one question from a provided Q&A.

We’ll provide questions in core subjects, including:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Science

Choose one question from the list and explain how you would teach it to a pupil.

The teaching Q&A helps us understand your subject knowledge and how you support GCSE and A-level pupils during a lesson.

Choose a subject you would like to tutor and focus on explaining your answer clearly.

How much time do I have to complete each interview question?

Each interview question includes time to prepare, record, and re-record your answer.

You do not need to use all of the available preparation time. You can start recording whenever you feel ready.

The recommended timings are:

  • Motivation question: 5 minutes to prepare and record your answer.

  • Teaching scenario question: 20 minutes to prepare and record your answer.

  • Final teaching scenario questions: 5 minutes to prepare and record your answers.

Can I re-record my interview answers?

Yes, you can re-record some of your answers.

The number of recording attempts depends on the type of question:

  • Digital ID check: One attempt only.

  • Employment history questions: Unlimited re-record attempts.

  • All other interview questions: One additional recording attempt.

You can choose to re-record an answer immediately or review your answers at the end before deciding which answers to record again.

Your answers do not need to be perfect. The team reviewing your interview understands that interviews can feel nerve-wracking and wants to learn more about you as a tutor.

What happens after my tutor interview?

After completing your interview, you’ll be redirected back to your MyTutor account. You can continue completing your tutor profile while you wait for the outcome.

Our team of experienced tutors will review your interview, and you’ll receive an email confirming whether your tutor application has been successful.

Due to the number of applications we receive, we’re unable to provide personalised feedback on individual interviews.
